CHINESE CADETS
INTERVIEWED BY
SIR GEORGE MILNE.
Field-Marshal Sir Georgo Milne, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, who was accompanied by Major General Sir Ivo Vesey, Director of Staff Duties, undertook the half- yearly inspection of the Royal Mili- tary College, Sandhurst, July 6, when the term ended and the Senior Division of Gentlemen Cadets passed out to receive their commissions in the British and In dian armies. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Trenchard, who was in, mufti, also accompanied the Field-Marshal in his inspection of the lines.
After being received with a gen- eral salute Sir George Milne, with the Commandant (Major-Generai Sir Roginald May), inspected the battalion in tine, beginning with the Champion Company, which bad on parade the King George V. banner. Then the Chief of the Imperial General Staff witnessed the imposing ceremonial of the transfer of this banner from No. 4 Company, the Champion Com pany of the past term, to No. 1 Company, commanded by Major Lo G. G. W. Horton, K.B.R.O., which has become the Champion Company for next term. The battalion

a number of interesting letters on the subject of vibration.
Writing in The Antocur, the makers state that torsional vibra- tion is so serious in some large power units that, if left unchecked, it would break a crankshaft which was run on the critical period for a few hours. The very clever Lan chester vibration damper, and similar means, use a loose mass on the crankshaft to check or dump these vibrations and make the en- gine safe and relatively silent through these periods.
"Cushioned Power," as adopted for the Minx, works on a similar principle, and, by allowing the engine to move instead of checking it harshly on the frame, softens out the effects in the engine and pre- vents its transmission to the frame and body.
What Speed Has Taught.
This year's Royal Air Force Pageant at Hendon was perhaps even more interesting than usual, awing to the greatly increased speed of all types of Hervice air eraft, which results from Britain's Auccesses in the last three Schnei- der Trophy contests..
The March of Progress.
The unostentatious manner in which the compression ignition en- gine is making its way into the flecks of large operations is shown in the case of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., who run regular acr. vices between London and Glasgow and London and Edinburgh.
On the first occasion that C. I. engines were utilised for express work, two A.E.C. Regal coaches, atted with 130 h.p. high-speed oil engines, worked the night runs be- tween London and Glasgow-410 miles. It is significant that during no part of the journey was there the slightest trace of odour and the passengers did not know they were in an oil-engined vehicle until so On the first 200 miles informed. of the northward run it was only necessary to change down from top gear twice, once being for road re- pairs.
