WASTING.

(Continued from Pape 1.)

He looked ahead and saw be yond the present crisis nothing but trouble for the railways. Trucks were one of the chief troubles, freight trucks. The truck companies were taking the' freight away from the railways. They had already taken a great. deal of all but the cheap freight. Coal they did not want to handit, but they

could

carry light freight more quickly and more cheaply than the railways, even as far as from New York to California. And they had the great advantage of being able to deliver their goods at the door of the shop, factory or house that had placed the order..

Plight of the Railroads. They were not doing much as yet with fruit, flowers, fish, milk, and' perishable vegetables because they. did not have refrigerator trucks in any great number, but they were building those. There would soon he fleets of refrigerators on wheels rushing back and forth across the country in every direction, over public highways, for whose unkeop they had to pay nothing.

"It may come to nationalisa- tion. The Government may have to take over the railways, but if we have the kind of Government we've got now-God help tha country """

We lunched by a stream under tall locust trees, and we cursed the Government as we ate cold chicken," We asparagus and strawberries. cursed Congress and the Senate and the President. We said all the things that everybody says about

them.

No man met in America has a good word to say for any of them, but it was very pleasant under the trees, and I was feeling much happier.

to be

Why What was there happy about? Well, there was the san for one thing, and the clear stream running over the pebbly bottom, and the good lunch and all the wide country spreading round us. It was my own country, and I was very worried about it But
