in celebration of the festival,-the Chinese St. Valentine's Day

The Chinese maidens' festival, otherwise known as the "seventh sister's "happy day or "Ha How" (beg for bestowal of skill) day, originated from a pretty fairy tale and is based on an astromomieni theory. Briedly the story is as fol lows,

The Story.

was the

The seventh sister" youngest of the seven, daughters.of the king of heaven and was very beautiful and skillful in the art of weaving silk. It was her duty to look after the world's silk mand facturing and weaving people and give them wisdom to enable them to produce artistic designs.

One day the princess fell in love. with a cow boy whose duty in the heaven was to look after the agricul: ture of the world. Because they

loved each other so much the king granted permission for them to be married-not without reluctance,

After their marriage however, the princess became very negligent of her duties and the king was com- pelled to separate them as a punish, mont. He decreed that in future the princess should live on the east aide of the milky way, while the cow boy lover should remain on the other side. Once a year only should they be allowed to meet, on the 7th day of the 7th moon.

Chinese astronomers associate this story with the two stars which are at all other times separated by the milky way or as the Chinese name it "silver river, but meet together

at this part of the year.

The story says that on the eve of the seventh day of seventh moon all the ravens flock to the "river" and form a bridge fur the cow boy to walk over. This explains the dis appearance of the ravens in the world during this season.
