In introducing the subject, Major Creagh said that the carriers of the world's air traffic had their eyes on Hong Kong. The dircetors of the French airline, which con- neets Saigon with Marseilles, and only the other week succeeded in travelling from Bangkok to Mar- seilles in six days, propose to switch their service to Hanoi in the month of October. A little more than a month ago the Far Eastern
representative of this Company "Air Orient" visited Hong Kong, having received instructions to ex- tend the line at the earliest op portunity to Hong Kong or Canton, wirichover gave the best facilities. The Dutch air liueK.L.M." had made many approaches to, the Hong Kong Government with a view to routing maits by that line, perial airways and one or American organisations had also made preliminary investigations.
HONG KONG'S PLACE.

two
Any of these nir lines would naturally be welcomed to Hong Kong but, as Britishers, be sup posed the welcome to a British air line would be very much greater.. Major Creagh, proceeded to dis- 158 ni some gth the political nd commercial importance of the development of British aerial in- terests in the Far East, pointing out, in particular, that orders for geroplanest were likely to go to the countrymen of those running the uir service.
"In order to have the right to spenk in the Far East or questions of aviation," said Major Creagh, "Hong Kong must have a place in the air. If you face these prob- lems, I think you will find sufficient justification, after examining the commercial aspect of them, to form the firm operation that the sooner an air line comes, the better for all
concerned."

FINANCE.
Coming to questions of income and expenditure, Major Croagh suggested that a line from Hong Kong to the nearest points at which contact can be effected with lines operating through to Europe (Hanoi for the French line and Bangkok for the Dutch) would have
maximum possible income of 878,000 a year, to be, increased perhaps in the third year to

be enough, and promoters must there fore look to the Government for a subsidy.
As far as he was aware the Gov crnment did not visualize in offer of support of more thag three lakhs, to be extended over five years. Ho was sure that 0.000, added to the 875,000 a year trendy mentioned, would not nexy ap preach the outgoings on the most
conservative estimate.
Major Creach had circulated to the meeting an extimate which sets forth the following itema:

In a footnote to this estimate Major Creagh suggested that the Government could properly be ask ed to guarantee the service-on & sliding scale, if necessary—an in- come of $160,000 in return for the carriage of mails, since on only 100 lba of mail per trip the Govern ment would receive some $274,000 in Postal Teca: Any surplus of Government subsidy would be ear. marked for capital expenditure on improvements,
