SIAM ADOPTS WESTERN IDEALS

PEACEFUL PEOPLE AND POLITICS STORMY SEA.

BUT LEAVES TRADE TO OTHERS.

[Br WILLIAM NUNN, M.P.]··

After the war she built up an active Air Force, whose aerodrome has become known throughout the world. Since peace came.Siam has made even quicker strides along the path of development.

Commerce in Siam is in ǹn almost unique position. No Siamese has a hand in it.

London, June 23.-Siam in revolt! The news came as a completo sur prise to those who know the coun try well, but whose knowledge stops short of the last two or three years. Of all countries, one would have named Siam as the most penecful and the least likely to be disturbed by active political trouble. It is true that, as far back as 1923, Chinese Bolshevist agents were at work; and it was known that, later on, seditionist, activities had increased to some extent. But it was generally supposed that there was no reason to think that Chinese. foreign propaganda would take serious hold upon the people.

Nor does it appear; from the news now to hand, that Siam's revolu- tion has been inspired from out-princes and nobles, not as figure- side.

Quickly Westernised.

What, therefore, have been the influences at work? Siam in a country about the size of Spain, with д population of perhaps 12,000,000.. Apart from the capital, Bangkok, where there is a depse concentration, the people are acat- tered thinly over the country.

The people are happy, peare- loving folk, with no great passion for work, content to cultivato their rice fields, and satisfy their modest demands with the least possible, trouble to themselves.

Causes of Discontent,

Towards the end of the reign of King Rama financial pficulties began, with the result that when, King Prajndhipok snececded to the throne drastia economies had to be enforced.

The new spirit of economy was, naturally, unpopular, but would have been nothing more, if the world's troubles had not just then begun to affect Siam.
