Swimming occupies a place of its dead heating with Mr. J. R. John- ~own in the sporting life of the Colohy. It provides a great deal of pleasure and recreation to count. less 'Gumbers of people locally, and to judge by a visit, on any fine day during the summer, to the principal bathing vanuts, such as Repulss Bay, Stanley, Shek O, Big Wave Bay, Victoria Recreation Club, European Y.M.C.A. and the Chinese bathing clubs near Quarry Bay, one can easily testify to the popularity this healthy sport holds among the various communities in Hong Kong Competitive swim-' mihg is also developing on a large ale, with the holding of fetes by the inore enterprising Chinese clubs, but prior to 1930, the Victoria Res creation Clab has been almost sole- ly responsible for holding cham pionship events, which enjoy a very. large following of sportsmen yearly who show keen appreciation of the art, while the struggles for honours in the annual championships pro- vide spectacular competitions in which swimmers manifest grea:
