ROTARY CLUB ADDRESS ON THE LEGEND AND THE FACTS.

DISILLUSIONED VIC TIMS OF THE WAR,

"Everybody has heard of the Freni Foreign Legion, but I am afraid what they have heard is not very ölten the truth," said Rotarian M. J. B. Montargis, at yesterday's mosting of the Rotary Chub. He continued:-

Although my remarks are not intended as propaganda? I should like to impress on you that the French Foreign Legion is much more than some books or pictures hare told us. Of course it is not a paradise, and I do not expect you to enlist right away. when I have completed my address; as after all the Volunteers or the Anti-aircraft Company are more select bodies, and have a prior claim upon your allegiance but the French Foreign Legion is not the infernal Region it is often, alleged to be...

I have been in contact with or lived near Members of the Legion on several occasions: firet hout 30 years ago, also during the Great War, and in the recent years, and at each visit I have been struck by the changes which had taken place within that ener- getie body of men.

Many of us admit ita traditional reputation for discipline and military valour, which has given rise to the seductive and misload, ing legends.

OUTLOOK.

Judging from some writers and artists, you would expect, to find in the French Foreign Legion a mysterious, original and strange phalanx, quite a special instrument of war, sensible and brutal at the same time; unique institution' which one

joined after having "lived" a good deal, either well or ill, and where are mixed, in a peculiar promiscuity, sharing the pains and labours of an errant life, men who have no root in society, the outlaws, disordered disappoint ed, disheartened men, wild spirits, adventurers, unsociable though civi¦ lised people of wandering soul, re- turning instinetively to the ances trul desert; or a sphere where are Star: Men Call It Loya,"

field or tailing in the workshopa.

Or perhaps you expected to find a troop of men of matured ag original, unique, almost aristocratic in spirit, in appearance, tendencies, manners or traditions, composed of soldiers, superior their daily task, and fit for everything: fight- ing (of course); washing, ironins cooking, acting, oclebrating the Mass, building bridges or construct- ing roads, writing verses, etc., ... where refined and disenchanted dilettantes" were living by the side of hardly civilised vogabonda.

And innily, you probably thought that from time to time, these ardent troops, confined in barracks and camps, broke out into crimes and astonishing scandals and disorders,

.

As to the officers, you perhaps. imagined some French or Foreigi volunteers, apostles on jailers, with a mysterious post, an inclination for taking all kinds of risks and adventures; "the" allurement of a delicate and difficult command, the passion of the "" jungle," rude to their men as to themselves, and (Continued on Page 21
