STERLING VALUË INCREASE-DOLLAR® DECREASE ON MAY 1931.
The Statistical Branch of the Imporis and Exports Department *reports that imports of merchandise into Hong Kong during the month of May amounted to a value of 8504 millions as compared with 858.1 millions in May of last year, representing a decrease of $47 millions or a per cent.
Exports were valued at 837.8 millions, a millions or 11.7 per cent.
The dollar values of both imports and exports atowed a decline in the first five months of the year as compared with the corre sponding period in 1981, but on account of the appreciation in the sterling exchange value of local currency, the sterling guros of imports and exports shoved a considerable gain as will be seen from the following table: -
