MAJORITY

SMALLER THAN EXPECTED

THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY.]

"PARIS, June 7.

AFTER hearing the statement headed by M. Harriot, the Chamber passed a vote of confidence by 300 votes to 132.

Some surprise was created by the size of the minority as, a practically unanimous vote was expected in view of the special design of M Herriot's programme in order to please both the Right and the Left. There were over fifty abstentions.

Socialist Vote.

The Socialists voted with the majority, but M. Leon Blum, their leader, explained that thoir sap port of the statement of policy did not mean that the Socialists were prepared to give unquestioning sup--| port to the Ministry,

M. Herriot retorted that he, could, not let the Socialist. vote influence his independence.

The Radical Socialists, the Rodi- eals and the Left formed the re- mainder of the majority.
