In the last few weeks the strain has been increased in some cases. One of the recent economy mensures has been to leave many a ship with only two deck officers besides the captain; in some, indeed, only one. Strange to say, there is no law- compelling even an Atlantic liner to carry more than one certificated officer in addition to the master. A total complement of two officers is cruel work. Sailora call it watch and watch. There is little to choose between say, Monday, when a man keeps the middle watch from mid- night to 4 a.m., and Tuesday, when he keeps the first watch from 8 p.m. to midnight and the "morning” (from 4 am to 8 am). One, thing I know. The poet who mused about the swiftness of the watch which ends the night before the dawning day had never been to sea! Take it from me; these are about the slowest hours of a man's life; but fresh courage always comes with the light of day.
"Cracking on," to use in old" sailing ship term, is J seaman's nightmare. "Master of the "whip
under God" may be his time-box- oured title; but none knows better that needs must when the devil drives.
