THE NAILING OF

THE COLOURS.

RUSSIAN REGIMENT'S NOVEL, CEREMONY,

A most picturesque ceremony in connection with that unique body of men, the Shanghai Russian Regi ment, took place last week, when the ceremony of "The Nailing of the Colours took place in the gymnasium of the S.V.C., The colours are to be presented to the Regiment on Sunday at a parade. in the Race Course. The nailing of the colours in an old-time custom associated with the traditions of the Bussian military going back to Peter the Great and probably much beyond that, and as far as possible the ceremony, was carried out in accordance with aid custom..

The gymnasium was decorated with flags while opposite the table on which the colours and the pike were laying, a portrait of the inte Toer was hanging. The ceremony, itself, was exceedingly simple, the large number of officers and officials who had gathered together to pay tribute to the floo regiment which will receive the standard with duc honours; to-morrow, each hammering in a mail to fix the colours to the handsome black pike on which they will be borne 'nloft. In addition to the above representatives of every rank in, the regiment, from Major Thieme, commanding, down to the private, hammered home their own nail, signed the roll and retired.

The ceremony was one of quiet dignity,, one in which a gallant and picturesque company of officers were only too happy to take. part, carried out before a file of men 20- presenting those to whom the new standard may probably mean, much in the days to come as its counterparts. did to those rugi- ments of old Russia of whom but a memory remains.
