HONG KONG'S WHOLESALE ATTEMPT TO SELL
PRICES IN 1931
DOWNWARD MOVEMENT IN NEARLY." ALL COMMODITIES.
As measured at the Statistical Branch of the Imports and Ex- ports Department, wholesale prices in Hong Kong during the your 1931, on the basis of 1024-100, showed; on balance, a general average index number slightly more than double the index figure for the United Kingdom, as measured at the Board of Trade, the respective figures reading: Hong Kong 1975; United Kingdom 02.0., 'It should be understood that the respective indexes are not strictly comparable.
From the following tables it will be seen that. the Board, of Trade index, number fell steadily in the first three quarters of the year, a slight rise being recorded in the December quarter; while. the gure for Hong Kong advanced slightly in the second quarter, and declined in the third and last quarters.
The continuous decline in wholesale prices in the United King dom, which had occurred month by month since October 1920, made its first break in the latter part of September 1981. As from the 21st of that month the sale of gold by the Bank of England at a statutory price cehsed to be obligatory, and the upward move.... ment in the Board of Trade index was directly attributable to the changed relation of sterling to the currencies of other countries subsequent to that date.
In some measure the downward movement in commodity prices in Hong Kong in the last quarter of the year can be attributed to tho appreciation of local currency in relation to the currencies of countries which had abandoned the gold standard.
So far hs Hong Kong is concerned. Total Food prices declined. .3% in the last quarter of the year as compared with the Septem- bor quarter; Cereals declining, 28%; Moat and Fish 12.8%, while Other Foods advanced. 6.5%.
In the Other Than Food group there was an average declino of 2.1%. Iron and Steel fell 12.7%, Coal 5%, Wool 23,8% and Other Textiles 2 Other Metala and Minerals, remained prac tically stationary while Cotton advanced 13.4% mainly on account of the boycott of Japanese goods, and Miscellaneous Items 5.8%. The index for all articles for the December quarter of the year declined 8.4% as compared with the first quarter, 6.7% as compared with the second quarter, and 1.8% as compared with the third quarter
