British machines are by far the most popular, particularly the B. 8 A., Triumph, Coventry-Eagle, New Hadson, Raleigh, and Afiel According to official figures, the more important registrations in 1930 were: American, "173; British; Triumph 52, B. 8. In addition, some 37 other makes registered from 1 to 4 machines.
Registrations during the first eight months of 1831 totalled 70 American nad 230 European motor cycles. The leading Európeni makes registered were the Ariel, Coventry-Eagle, B. S. A. and F. N.
Zo
Types in Demand.
The single-cylinder model is by far the most popular, accounting for 447 unite in 1930; the remaining machines comprised 182 with 2- dylinder motors and of 3 cylin- ders. The most popular size of motor, is that with cylinder content of 500 cubic centimeters, there being demand for machines with smaller content. The 800's and 750s Fare also admired, but are sold principally to old users. Sales of 2-cylinder machines of larger cylin- dor content are limited by their cost. Dealers report that the shaft drive is hardly known in Portugal; all machines are chain driven. Ac-, cording to 1330 figures, there were registered 285 models of 3, horse- power; 145 from 34 to 4 horsepower, 130 of 4 to 8 horsepower, and 42 of 51 to 8 horsepower, leaving only · 36 machines of more than 8 horse- power.
Eide Cars.
in
Bide cars have lost much of their popularity in recent years, particu larly since the advent of the amal passenger car and the inörasse number of taxicsha. In 1930, only 93 cycles equipped with side curs were registered out of total of 638. It is believed, that a demand will develop for machines equipped with special side cars for commer- cial purposes, but there are no signs of the side car relarning to its former place in pleasure use..
British Colour Scheme.
Colour plays a most important part in the sale of motor' eycles.. The scheme in most favour is black or bluc, preferably the former, with all parts chromium finished. British manufacturors have boon quick to take advantage of this.l preference, and have improved the appearance of their machines, with a resultant increase in sales.
Sir Malcolm had set his heart on reaching 285 m.p.b.
Although arrangements had been made for the car to be shipped back to England to day, it was reported last night that he might make an- other attempt on the record to-day.
