In response to a large number of telephone inquiries, the American Consulate has notified American nationals, that there is no occasion for concern regarding the question of possible evacua. flon, as the interests of Americans in Shanghai are receiving the careful attention of a Special Citizens' Committee, which has been organized purely as a precautionary measure, and which has formulated a definite plan for action in case of need.. The Editor of the Shanghai Bening Post and Mercury contributes a signed article purporting to give sensational details of a visit to Klangwan Racecourse, alleging that the entrances to the grand stand are blocked with fresh corpses, including the bodies of women and children.

The unexpected stamina of the Chinese troops has surprised all who thus far underrated their Aghting qualities: The realisation is growing that the Japanese Army is meeting with stiff resistance, and it is hoped she may thereby bo induced to moderate her de- mands in patching up an agreement with the Chinese.
British students of the Far Eastern situation are paying attention to the heavy strain on the Japanese Exchequer by the prolonged large-scale operations impelling Tokyo to
