PROGRESS.

The following letter was amusing but tue long, we give parts of it below. -

Dear Sir, Herewith please, find my entrance form to attached ad- Fertisement which I consider the best that has appeared in your valued paper, between the stipulat ed datea of the, competition.

em-

I have chosen "The Lover's. Pro- gress" (Mackintosh's advt.) not be. cause I am in love, or havo any pretentions of to becoming bellished in the near or even distant future-but because it so thoroughly depicts the true atmosphere wherein the young man moves in the Coloris, ~ Clothes are, of the utmost import, and make the man hero in Hong Kong. Mackintosh have grasped this attitude of our bright young people and ably exploited it.

My advice to the young fellow in Hong Kong is "Go to Mackin- tosh's, They'll make you!

But

I'm not yet in the swim. one day "go to Mackintosh's and then plunge in head first. not care if I drowni

The Lover's Progress" is best because in just so many bright illus trutions, captioned with just so brief expetitiides, it tells the same story I have told in two pages of scribbled sentences! (The ty pagea in question were cul vul, because. though amusing in parts, they had no relation to the reason's why the writer considered this advertise. ment the best.-Ed.).

The whole advertisement is well laid out.

Final $50.00 Contest VOTED THE BEST

THE ADVERTISEMENTS VOTED THE BEST BY QUR READERS' ARE REPRODUCED ON THE OPPOSITE PAGE.

NAVAL MAN WINS FINAL COMPETITION.

We publish to-day the final results of our Christmas Competition. The Competition was divided into six contests, the Arst sve, for each of which a priża of $10.00 was offered, for the best letter giving reasons for the writer's choice of what' he considered to be the most effective advertisement of the week, and the sixth competition for the best letter giving reasons for the choice of what was considered the best advertisement for the perted under review, that is ba tween the dates of November 21 and December 25,

CHINA AND THE NAVY..

The competition has proved very popular among our readers and extremely interesting, to us. Points of interest are the large number of letters, from. Chinese readers; many of these were not sufficiently well expressed to be considered seriously as possible prize winners, but none 'the less showed a keen appreciation of the good points of the advertisements Chosen. The extraordi- nary divergence of opinion as to which was the best advertisement each week wag'also interest» ing, the only advertisement that won “hands down" on popular vote was that issued by Mackin- tosh's, Ltd., which is reproduced on the opposite page, though Caldbeck, MacGregor's advertise. ment, and that of the Dalry Farm, pooled about 60 per cent, of the votes in the 5th competition..

A keen interest in the competition was shown by men of HM's forces, a naval man, Mr. W. H. Ray, writing the winning letter is no less than three competitions, another naval mau, Mr. S. F. Vigar; winning the 3rd contest, while Mr. J. E. Smith, A.B. of H.M. Submarine Olympus, has been adjudged the winner of the final $50.00 competition.

*** A curlows feature is that on no occasion has the writer of the winning letter chosen the advertisement which was acclaimed the best by popular vote.

THE WINNING ADVERTISEMENTS,

Of the advertisements that gained most votes each week four out of the six were for forms of drink, Dodwell's advertisements for Black and White Whisky being voted the best In the 2nd, 3rd and 6th (final) contests, and an advertisement for Champagne issued by Caldbeck MacGregor's tying for first place to the 5th contest. One of Mr. Kobza's advertisements for portrait photography was voted the best in the first competition, Mackintosh's ran away with the votes in the 4th competition with "The Lover's Progress" whlle" the Dairy Farm shared the honours with Caldbeck MacGregor's in the 5th contest.

forced to road what is said under each illustration!

The apacing of the whole advt. is elegant. The type used, the frame work surrounding the adser, tisement and the size of it as a whole, is a smart piece of work. It has just enough white space in it not to make the type look con- jeated.

Fairly large and situated on the shipping page it needs no added prominence, but even receives this by means of the illustration. Thia gives one an impression of the might and splendour of the boat.
