"Scott was suffering from cancer and dreaded the operation he would have to undergo. He was evidently determined that he would rather die than have the operation. It was a pity that he should have jumped to the conclusion that death was pre- "ferable to cancer. In some cases it
is, but in others there is a very reasonable chance of cure.
