TWO SEASONABLE ADVERTISEMENTS GAIN LARGEST NUMBER OF VOTES.

Mr. W. H. Ray, who has already won twice during the course of our Christmas, competition. has been judged the winner of the of the 5th $10.00 context. His letter, reproduced on this page, gire an excellent resume of the selling points of the small advertisement he has chosen.

THE WINNING ADVERTISEMENTS.

Pressure of space does not permit of the publishing of any of the many other laiters received. The concensus of opinion was however that the two advertisements reproduced' below, issued by Caldbeck MacGregor & Co., Ltd, and by The Dairy Farm Ice & Cold Storage Co., Ltd, respectively, were far and away the most striking. These two advertisements, which both incidentally got the same number of.votas, gained about 70 per cent, of the total number registered,

CHRISTMAS COMPETITION.

Dear Sir,

In Great Britain and the United States, hundreds of millions of dol

·lars are being spent anzually on advertising. Fancy, as much as 85,000 being spent for just no page and one insertion in the "Saturday Evening Posu." Great concerns who do so, repeat again and again, year after year, which naturally proves that money spent in judicions advertising is not an ex- penditure but an investment-in other words, newspaper advertising adda greater life to business.

Having resigned from the British American Tobacco Co. of Tientsin,. where I have been looking after advertising in co-operation with selling schemes and sales work for the last nine years, 1 re cently arrived hera and. WAL pleasintly amazed at the excel- lent idea of the "Daily Presa ", at- having, inaugurated the compoti- tion, which naturally will create more readers' concentration on ad- vertisimonta-not mere that "pasa ing glance which is so often all that ng advertisement gets. It should also encourage advertisera In to send out better "copy." business almost the whole of my life out here, I know that that when a customer walks into a abore and asks for Bay Cap- stans" the salesman if he has none unlike his fellow Europe or America, will coldly shake his head cud say No have got" He won't try to persuade his pus- toper to try something else. This therefore, makes it necessary to de- pead more upon advertising than on salesmanship and the Arst thing a man gets in the morning is his newspaper with the ads! The art of advertising here is not in my opinion up to standard. The types are often either too large or small and sometimes the entire lay-out is out of harmony, The Daily Press" having taken an excellent initiativa

toward better advertising I venture to take a shot in the competition though I do not latter myself that I know any more than an averago fellow who handles adą.

···F'm backing BOYRIL and enclon- ed herewith is my letter supporting my claims that Bovril is very well' advertised.

With compliments of the Season,

Yours faithfully, JOSEPH A. GUTIERREZ. c/o The Tar East Trading Co.
