DEBT PAYMENTS IN SILVER.
PROPOSAL INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS.
MORATORIUM NOT YET
RATIFIED.
Washington, Dec. 18.--Senator Clarence C. Dill, Republican of the State of Whabington, to-day intro- duced into the United States Senate a bill providing that other nations would be authorized to pay their war debts to the United Statos in silver provided that the debtors Ustablish silver as money.
A similar measure without spoui- fying that silver be used as, money. was introduced into the Senats Inst work by Senator Reed Smoot, Re- publican of Utah and Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
Today, Sonata Dill attackel Senator Smoot's proposal, declar- ing that, without specifying the payment of silver as money to meet foreign war debt obligations to the United States the Smoot bill would mean simply that America would' be the damping ground for surplus world bar silver stocks.
It is not expected that the Senate will take action on either the Dill ar Smoot exsures for some time" in view of the pressure of other business..
Meanwhile, Congress has not act- ed to ratify the one year Hoover war debts and reparations morator- ium, Democratic leaders to-day de- vided that the Democratie members of both the Senate and House of Representatives may vote without regard to partisan considerations' when confirmation of the morator ium comes up for vote. To-day foreign hations had war debts total- ling C.$125,000,000 due to the United States but despite the fact that the moratorium, has not been ratified no payments were collected ander the terras of an agreement. entered inte by the State Depart ment and the Department of the Treasury. PRINCE'S SYMPATHY WITH SUFFERING.
Newcastle-on-Tyne, Nov. 18.-The action of the Prince of Wales in obtaining leave for a soldier to come home from Egypt to see his dying mother was related by Dr. Gordon Robinson, now of Tow Law, Co. Durham, and formerly of Wiż- ney, Oxtn.
