WORD "DAMN" IN A PLAY.

MINISTER OBJECTS IN "TRONE OF AUDIENCE.

ARMY REUNION) LANGUAGE.

A controversy has arisen at the Upper Holloway Baptist Church concerning the word " dama " spoken in an amateur play called "The Thief" which was performed

in the church hall.

The word was used by a "village polierman" and a "local farmer."

At the end of the play the new minister of the church, the Rev. A.

J. Klaiber, raised objection while the players were standing before

the audience after having received

their plaudits. He said that he had

The Author's View.

TWISTED EAR OF HIS COMRADE.

SOLDIER SENTENCED BY-

COURT MARTIAL.

Woolwich-An unusual example of Army discipline has been re- ported,

It is announced that Gunner Thomas Warren, of the Second Training Brigade, Royal Artillery Depot Woolwich, has been Ben- tenced by district court martial to 42 days' detention for treating another soldier by twisting his car.

"I tried to demonstrata "that'a thief, a Bar, a vamp and a gambler could get ́n frësh start and make good--that religion chiefly concern- ed with the keeping of its cere- -monios' was worth nothing, but than mordy, and forgiveness in a humble person, were to be desired. Also that men who chose on occasion to use damn might be more righte ous than one who is for ever attend ing religious meetingu.

Surely it must be admitted that in a dramatic situation most men, ordinary folk, I menu, are dis posed to use words they would not otherwise, think of using. I had to portray living people.

"Is it all matter that these atfangers" (aune of the members of the east word nat members of the church) who so ungrudgingly gave theh time and labour should, at the conclusion of their offorts," be publicly trounced 1 "
