In my opinion the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Treders are not entirely guiltless in this matter. It should be easy for them, to recommend to their members, that certain fittings should be really standardised.
For example, I have come across four different kinds of door-hundles during my tests. In one ear it was necessary to pull back a lever, la augther, the lever had to be jatshed, forward. In a third, the only way of opening the door was lower the window and push one's arm through the openings that the outside handle might be turned: The fourth lover was so close to the window handle, that one's knuckles were grazid every time an atteint was made to operate it.
