DRESSING WELL-

FOR EVENINGS.

[BY JACQUELINE HOWARD.]

It is true that many people will need fewer evening dresses than usual this winter, because instead of going abroad to places where the newest and most luxurious evening acquisition, is only one among a crowd of other lovelinesses, they will probably go to places nearer home where the formal evening dress is only rarely needed.

This is no reason for dressing, for "indifferently. It is to be hoped that on the contrary it will stimulate us to a better knowledge of the demi-toilette; a knowledge in which the average Englishwoman is seldom very proagent.

THE SMILE OF THE SEA PRINCESS.

CHAPTER VI.

(Continued, from Last Friday.) John-dory tried to keep near to the Coral Princess without her swing him. I am so ugly," he thought, "that, if she once caught sight of me, she would turn away her head, so as not to. Sometimes, just for a moment, ho felt very and, for he remembered very well how handsome he had boon when he was a royal merman, and lived in his father's Palace with his eleven brothers,

But then, he would remember that it was of no use to frat; and he

Then he would look round to see whether there was anything he could do to help anyone else," and he always found something to do. One day he saw n ́hammer-fish come up to the Palace, to put up some ca-weed hangings ready for the great ball to be held the next night.. it combines a delicate appearance and a great power of enduranée.

But this applies to ordinary lace. „The dull-surfaced and heavy-yet finely patterned violet lace which made one of the most attractive dresses I have soen for a long time is in quite a different catogory.

The qualities which made one- long to possess this frock for one- self had nothing to do with ques- tions of expediency. The violet tone was warm but soft. The neck- line was only moderately low in front and ended in that deep Yat the back which gives a long slender line. The skirt fitted closely round the hips and fell in long graceful folds round the feet. It was held at the waist by a belt of diamanté. All this elegance, however, and ali the difference of appearance be tween this and the lees we know so well are still allied to prac- ticality.

Her beauty quite took away Johnsdory's breath, so that at first ho did not get who were the guests" just behind the King and Queen and Princess. When at last he saw who they were, John-dory very nearly fell out of his hiding palaces with surprisé. They were the old Sea-witch and her ugly son, the young Sen-wizard!

Bo John-dory thought it would be a good thing if he could hide among the Benwerd hangings, and watch what went on. No one would ever know, and he would have a good chance to see the Coral Princess in the lovely robes they wore, at the moment, making for her. The next night, when the Palace was crowded from end to end with guests, John-dory carried out his plan. He had made a cun- ning little nook for himself among the thick hangings of sonweed, and thence he was able to watch all that

went on.

What he was most eager to soa was, of course, the Coral Princesa The hammer-fish had told him that } she would look lovely as a dream, and when she at last came into the great ball-room, John-dory thought

the lines are actually classical; but merely that this is an early rein- troduction of linos we shall prob ably see very often in the futuro. They are. ominently satisfying to people who appreciate the human lures at its best and undistorted.

Both these dresses were worn by n air-haired mannequin with an ex- ceptionally good Agurs. Both couk be worn successfully with dark or silver hisir as well; and their lines would do much to help the indif- ferent figure to look good. The brown dress would naturally not be chosen for a silver-haired woinan unless her eyes were dark.

The woman with the least ten- dency towards a high colour would naturally avoid violet. Fow colurs are kinder to an evenly toned skin, in the proper evening circumstances, but nothing is more coarsening to (Continued on pert Volumn.)
