EFFECTS OF ABANDONMENT OF GOLD PRICES
IN BRITAIN.
FIGURES FOR THIRD QUARTER OF THE YEAR.
"
As measured at the Statistical Branch of the Imports and Ex- porta Department, wholesale prices in Hong Kong during the first three quarters of 1931 showed, on balance, a general average index number slightly more than double the United Kingdom index num. ber, as measured at the Board of Trade, the respective figures being: Hong Kong 120.1; United Kingdom 09.4.
For purposes of comparison, the Hong Kong index numbers have been converted from the basis of 10/22-100 to 1991-100. I should be understood, however, that the respective indexes are not strictly comparable.
The general average for all articles in the United Kingdom showed a steady quarterly decline throughout the whole period, whereas the Hong Kong Sgure rose slightly in the second quarter. and fell comparatively heavily in the third quarter.
Great Britain abandoned the gold standard on September 2, and it is interesting to note that the index figure for all articles Increased from 38.2 in the earlier rart of the month to 80.2 in the later part of the month. The principal, proportionate. increases oc- curred in the cereals group (6.8 per went.), cotton (6.3 per cent.), textiles other than cotton and wool (5.2 per cent.). and other. metals and minerals (3.2 per cent.). The meat and fish group de elined 4.4 per cent.
The provisional index figure of 120.5 for Hong Kong for the month of October (on a 1994 basis) is the lowest recorded this year, the July figure being 135.6,, August 198.8 and September 121.7. As compared with September the index number for Toddstuffs fell from 138.1 to 130.1, while the index number for hrticles other than food increased from 116.9 to 117.3,
