SIR ROBERT LOOKS BACK 50 YEARS.

CELEBRATES GOLDEN WEDDING: 1,500 GUESTS

AT PENINSULA HOTEL.

GOVERNOR REVIEWS LIFETIME OF PUBLIC SERVICE

AND BENEFACTIONS,

Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tang, who celebrated their Golden Wedding yesterday, were the reoipionts of endless congratula tions from their many friends not only in Hong Kong and China but from all over the world. Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung held a reception at the Peninsula Hotel in the afternoon and no fewer than 1,500 people attended Lavish generosity was shown by Sir Robert who forestalled every need of his numerous guests and left no detail to chance. Special ferries, bedecked with flags and pennants were run during the afternoon to and from Hong Kong and on the Peninsula a special motor car service was made avail- able to his guests.

The Root Garden and Rose Room of the Peninsula Hotel, where the celebration was held, were specially decorated for the been- sions. Speeches of felicitations were delivered by H.E. the Gover nor and by the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotowall and Sir Robert suitably replied.

To commemorate the occasion, Sir Robert announced that he would contribute a further $200,000 to charity, half of which was to be applied to the building of a children's welfare centre in the New Territories and the other half to provide education for poor girls in the Eastern district (Wanchhi).

The celebration was rendered: the more picturesque by the gorgeous black and red dresses worn by many of the Chinese ladies. present, Lady Ho Tung wore a flowered red satin gown with gold embroidery and a similarly embroidered black silk brocaded cost. Sir Robert appeared in dark blue Chinese coat with the cuts- tomary black coat.

The Chinese community, represented by officials of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Tung Wah Hospital. Po Leung Kuk and the Twenty-Four Merchants' Guild attended at Sir Robert's residence in Seymour Road in the morning and prosented congratu latory addresses, to which Sir Robert appropriately replied. "Idlewild," Sir Robert's residence, presented a mass of handsome- ly painted and embroidered eulogistic scrolls received by the happy. couple from friends everywhere and there, was also a large display of valuable presents.

this is true, but I suggest that, if it is, he might perhaps take Lady Ho Tung on a new honeymoon to that place in Amerien; in order to atudy the conditiena there. I un. derstand that the attractions at Hollywood are very great, and per- hups it would be safer to make the visit on the lines I suggest. (Laughs ter.)

One cannot but be struck by the great energy and virility of Sir Robert and Lady Ho Tung, having regard to-I must not say to the fact that they have enjoyed fifty years of married life, for. public life; and I am therefore all the more able to realize the enormous help that Lady Ho Tung must have been to Sir Robert during the fifty years that they have been together. Her work in the New Territories is well-known to most of us, though perhaps we do not realize its full extent. She has done most excellent work in

"onnection with sericulture and "griculture, showing what can be done in these industries in this Colony. Whenever she takes a
