SHIPPING CHANGES.

INCREASED USE OF OIL

FUEL.

Important features brought out in the annual report of Lloyd's Re gister of Shipping, issued recently, are the steady advance of the in térnal.combustion engins, the ip- creasing adoption of oil fuel, and the development of electric propul- ¡sion.

Emphasis is laid on the markað [shrinkage of crders for new ships, especially in the United Kingdom.

A reduction of over 1,300,000 60118, as compared with" the previous twelve months, is shown.

"The outlook, it is added, "is still unpromising. The depression has broadened and deepened during the year. The tonnage of vessels laid up how more than doubled." The world total of idle shipping, is now 10,800,000 tons, and there is no indication of any immediate im-

provement.

WAS

The total tonnage of merchant 1,3359,216 vessels afloat as the end of June,
