WHOLESALE PRICES IN HONG KONG.

EFFECT OF DEPRECIATED DOLLAR.

OFFICIAL FIGURES.

As measured at the Statistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Department, wholesale prices in Hong Kong during the first seven months of 1931 showed, en balance, a general average index figure slightly more than doubt the United Kingdom index figuro, as measured at the Board of Trade, for the same period, the respective figures for all articles being: United Kingdom 62.1; Hong Kong 198

Since January of this your the Statistical Offion has constructed an index on the basis of 1922 100, and the index figures have been reconverted for the purpose of comparison with the Board of Trade index which is based on 1924 = 100.

The molection of 1022 as the Hong Kong hase your was prompted by the fact that 1929 most nearly approached a normal year of any since the war.

The decline in sterling wholesale prices has porsistently con“ tinued since the latter end of 1920, the local increases being almost entirely due to the depreciated value of Hong Kong currency.
