PRODUCTION OF OIL IN BRITAIN.

The process is known as the hydrogenation process because the use of hydrogen is an essential feature, since it combines chemical ly with the coal and its decompost tion products. It can be operated to produce refined motor spirit as a sole product, or a variety of pro- ducts such as petrol, Diesel engine oil, fubricating oil and fuel oil.

Let us consider the case of a plant to hydrogenate 1,000 tons of clean, dry coal per day. If operated for petrol only, expert calculation shows that a plant would produce $13,000 tons of No. 1 motor spirit and require for its running 850,000 tuns of conl yearly. Furthermore,. it has been calculated that the operation of such a plant would give permanent occupation: to 5,000 men, of whom 2,000 would be miners, whilst some 17,000 addi- tional men would be employed for (1) two years during the period of construction;
