LOCAL MOB OF 2,000 STONE JAPANESE SHOP.
A recurrence of the anti-Japanese demonstrations took place at Wanchai at 8:30: last night, when a mob of about two thou sand stoned a Japanese shop situated at 137, Hennessey Road, and caused considerable damage to the exteriore of the premises." A party of police from the Wanchal station, under. Sergeants ~Nolan and Drewery were also stoned and forced to take refugal In a Chinese house when they attempted to disperse the demon...... strators. The police patrol was successful, however, la affecting some arrests, and despite the fact that many officers were struck by flying stones they retained hold of their prisoners until relleved by the Emergency Unit from Central
It is understood that the police party were patrolling the streets when they came upon the mob on a large area of, waste ground between Johnston and Hennessey Roads. They made a baton charge and, as stated, arrested several of the rioters. The mob then directed their stone-throwing towards the police, and the patrol, retaining their prisoners, took refuge in a Chinese house in Hennessey Road. They remulded there for about ten minutes, during which time a large section of the mob had worked round to the back of the house with the obvious Intention of forcing their way in
TEN DEMONSTRATORS ARRESTED.
They were frustrated, however, by the arrival of the Emergency Unit. The prisoners were placed into the van and the mob was dispersed by a succession of baton charges,
Up to a late hour the streets of Wanchal were being patrolled by parties of police carryleg riot batons in addition to their usual, arms, but although reports of further demonstrations' continued to be received they were found on investigation to be mere rumours, and strict watchfulness "on the part of the police, combined with their policy of dispersing any party of hooligans Immediately. It was formed, seemed to ensure peace in the Wanchal, district for the remainder of the night,
The L.G. Mr. E. D. C. Wolle, was for a time in charge of the police operations, being assisted by Chief Inspector Grant and Inspector McLellan,
Altogether about ten arrests were made, and it is possible that the prisoners will be charged with disorderly conduct,
The injuries sustained by the police were of of a serious character, though brulses and cuts were the rule rather than the exception
As far as could be ascertained, none of the rioters were seriously hurt
