THE CHINA SOCIETY.

SIR REGINALD JOHNSTON'S LECTURE

A ROMANTIC POET MONK,

On June 12, before a mangro au- dienos of about twenty members of the China Society, Sir Reginal F. Johnston, Professor-elect of Chin ess Language and Literature at the University of London, read a pa | por în "à Poct-Monk of Modern China." The proceedings took place at the School of Oriental Studies, Finsbury Circus, and Bir Denison Ross, who introduced the lecturer and thanked him at the close, attributed the small atten- dance to the first real sunshine this country had for the Inst... six months, Those who had absented themselves had missed an intoller tual treat,

The post-monk, whose life and work were so admirably decribed by Sir Reginald Johnston-but at such a rate that no reporter could keep pace with him was Chi Nghan. Born in 1851, Chi was left destitute as a child and while young became a Buddhist monk. Though suffering a most serious handicap from lack of education's he became a poet, nad sometimes worked for several years over ¿no poem, and days and weeks over d word to express his thoughita, Yet so highly was ha boncured that when the Buddha Association was formed in 1919 in China he was appointed as first president. He died while on a visit to Peiping to see the Government regarding. the position of Buddhism under the new regime Sir Rogináld, commenting on the affinity between Buddhism and pootry, said the fact that the founders of Buddhist hormitages selected beautiful sites might explain why there was so much natural mysticism

The lecture was preceded by the annual meeting of the Society, the business of which was of a formal nature.

On June 13 members of the So. ciety and Chinese studente in Lon don wore guests of Lord Rochdale. and Miss Kemp at a garden party. at the Old Hall, West Hill, High. gate.
