GIANT TELESCOPE.
NEW EQUIPMENT" AT" GREENWICH,
Two now, telescopes are to be in- stalled at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich,
On the annual visitation of the Board of Visitors the model of one of them” was exhibited in the library.
It is 38in in diameter and will bo erected in an enclosure in the park. It is to be used to measure the temperatures of the stars,
A second now instrument is also to be erected in the park. This is
a new transit circle, and is to take tho place of the famous, transit circle that for B0 years has marked the zero meridian of the earth from which all longitude and all time systems are reckoned,
The new transit circle will not be erected on the Greenwich meridian. But since it is obviously impossible to change the Greenwich meridian-it would mean changing all maps and charts and starting new time system-a correction will bo applied to all the observations made with the new instrument to allow for the slight difference in | position.
To tho, gucate the great 29-in. telescope the largest astronomical instrument in this country-was the chief attraction.
It was trained on a double star, in the constellation of the Lion," and most of those present took the opportunity of seeing, with its aid, these two points of light shining together in the broad daylight sky.
The large revolving domo which covers this instrument has just been equipped with an electric motor for moving it.
