'GUARDS FIRE ON
FISHERMEN.
INCIDENT ON THE RHINE.
Strassburg, July 6.—Two. Alsatian Babermen were shot it by German Customs "guards and one seriously wounded педр the Strassburg suburb Wangenau last night. The boat of the two had been carried by a strong current towards the German bank of the Rhine, where' the Customs guards, challenged it in the belief that the two inmates of the boat were smugglers. When the two fishermen ignored the challenge, the guarda opened fire.
The Press describes the incident da" regrettable, even though it admits that the guards acted se cording to their instructions. The man who had escaped injury con- firmed that the Germans had re- peatedly challenged them, though ho strenuously denied that they had been on a smuggling expedition.
