PUNCH AND JUDY.

ONCE POPULAR SHOW IN

ITS DECLINE.

The Punch and Judy show threatens soon to be a thing of the past. In Paris the "Guignola" in the Avenue des Champs Elyades are as, popular as ever; in Italy the Marionette Players still carry on a centuries-old tradition; but in England it appears probable that the Punch and Judy show will for low the organ-grinder and performing bear into oblivion.

The old showmen trained from childbood in their art' are slowly dying ont and there are no young men to take their place.

the

Last month the London. Morning Poet announced the death of Henry James Hayes, the oldest Punch and Judy showman in England, who for years used to delight the children on the Folkestone Leas. Most - of his fellow-showmen are getting old; and in a few years' time it is fear- ed that the Punch and Judy show

Some showinen are still occasion- ally to be seen in the London streets; and performances are from time to time given in turnings off the Haymarket or Bond-street. But traffic has increased during the past 20 years, and Punch's quipa arc more often than not drowned by the noise of the traffic.

Some showmen wander during the summer from one seaside resort to- another, trying to put by a little money whid will keep them and their dogs during the winter, and a few earn a living by giving shows. at garden fêtes and children's parties; but there is only a limited demand for this sort of entertain

ment.

least to that of Paris.

The whole party was eventually roturned to store.

At lunch-time on Sunday witness” went to his son's room and found him lying with his head almost co vered by the clothes. There was a smell of ether in the room.

"He was evidently suffering from strain," Mr. Morton said, "and I know he had been sleeping badly, for one morning recently I noticed his light burning at 3.30 am, and asked if anything was wrong. Ho said, No, I am all right. I am just trying to read myself to sleep." I feel certain he took this ether to get some sleep."

Dr. Peter Carrick, of Charlton- road, Blackheath; said that in. Dr. Morton's mouth was a sponge bag filled with cotton wool and snelling of ether. Death was due to a phy xia, following regurgitation, while under the influence of ether.

Dr. W. H Whitehouse, the caro- ner, recorded a verdict of acci- dental death.

FATE OF TEXAS, GUINAN.

NO TRIUMPHAL ENTRY TO PARIS-IN WHITE BREECHES |

- England derived a good deal of quiet humour at the misfortunes of Mrs. Texas Guinan as the following extract from the London Morning. Pust clearly showe:-

Paris, May 31.Uncertainty still reigns as to the fate of Texas Guinan and her ifteen "wonder- fu girls who are held up at Le Havre pending the Government. de- cision on the desirability of allow- ing the troupe to enter France.

Texas Guinan, the "night club queen" of America, is indignant.. Her chagrin is said to be all the mr bitter as she was counting on a triumphal entry into Paris and had disembarked wearing her famous white breaches and circus hat all ready to mount her equally famous piebald.pray that is now detained with the rest of the party. As for the girls imprisoned in the large and gloomy building that serves as Franco's Ellis Island they are all most depressed.

After the interview held last night with the Freach officials sent from Paris the morale of the girls was particularly low. They say that they have given up good salaries in, New York for, the sake of making a trip to Europe, and complain despondently of the lack of gallantry of the French authori ties

Texas herself, who according to her own statement is in a position not to be worried by the financia aspect of the incident, and declares that she organised the visit exclu- sively for, the girls, remains cheer, fal and optimistic, though she does not conceal the hurt to feelings.
