THE CHILDREN'S CORNER.
CARING FOR YOUR PETS;
GOLDFISH,
Many of you have had goldfish at one time or another, and the Ash have died after a few months! Perhaps you bought more fish aud they died, too, and then you gave up in disgust. But when you know how to take care of them they will live for a very long time.
Globes Are Bad,
One of the worst places in which to keep goldfish is glass globe.
They may look very pretty inside the round glass receptacle, but you do not enjoy them half so much in such a tank and the fish are not vory happy where all they can do' is swim round and round with the convex glass drawing heat and get- ting the water so hot that the air
in it is taken away.
A
When that happens the fish die.
Of course, you can change the
water every day, but that is bad,
too.
The right way to keep fish is to have a real tank-s square one.
They can be bought in all sorts of sizes at all sorts of prices for a tank heavier than you can lift, with an aluminium frame, a slute bottom, and plate glass sides.
Of course glass draws the sun's heat to a certain extent, but flat glass globe does it much. less than the side of a glass glöbs."
With round aquariums the glass acts just the same as when you hold A magnifying glass in the sun.

A RARE WILD CAT.
A very rare black eat has just. arrived at the London Zoo from Eastern Asia
It is really a golden cat, but in- stead of being of a lovely red gold colour, as its kind usually are, it happens to be a black example and. so is very rare indeed.
The ordinary golden' cat is about the same size as an ocelot, and although its body is covered with bright golden red hair, shading to chestnut towards the tail, its face is prettily marked with stripes of white, red-gold, and black.
Now, curiously enough, the new black golden cat just arrived at the Zoo, though it is jet black all over, yet shows the same sort of stripes on its face, but in a rather lighter shade of black-just as marks show on paper, or as wavy lines show on moire sille.

THE GOLDEN COBBLER.
CHAPTER IV,
FAIRY GOLD..
For a few moments the Cobbler was too dazed to speak or move.
Then, bending down, he put the golden shoes on his feot and, to his great surprise and delight, he found that they fitted him perfect
Go, fetch a light, wife, and let us look at my fairy gift!
This big black wild pussy is rather fiercer than the other or dinary golden cat in the Zoe, and it is a very strange thing that blacky Full of glee, he cried aloud: varieties of wild beasts always are much more, savage than the colour- ed members of their family. • Quickly his wife obeyed; for the was just as enger as her husband to look at the magic shoes. As BOOD as the candle had been lighted, it was found that the fairy had indeed spoken the truss, and that her gift was a real one. For wherever the Cobbler trod with the magic shoes, the mark of gold remained;"
In a very short time there were golden footmarks all over the floor of the hut. For the Cobbler and- his wife, and Sulkianna danced about" for: joy," feeling sure that their troubles were now at an end. They would soon be rich and happy, they said, adding
Sulkianna was now all smiles and merry chatter. She thought of the pretty frocks she could buy," and of the parties she would go to. Her mother too began to think at once of the good food, they would all have to eat next day, and every day that should follow
:: Bo it came about that the poor Cobbler got no rest that night; for hia eager wife kept him on his feet n his feet until morning dawned..
She made him danor on the chairs and the tables and the beds, until they were all changed to solid gold. Then whan morning came, she took out some of the smaller pices of gold, and went into the town to buy food for a grand feast. For they were all very hungry by this time.
Sulkianna also went out with her mother, as she wished to get rid of her rage at once. And since they bought the richest foods, and chose the finest gowns, their change of fortune" soon became known to äll. It was the talk of the whole town
As they came out from the shops, Prossed in silks and laces and jewels, they told the glad nÓWa to every one they met. As": the news became known, people camo an flock to see the Cobbler and his wonderful maglo shoes
