sonné, enamel-work. The colours used are green, yellow, aubergine, turquois and dark violet-blue in varying arrangements of three. The other group consists of enamel. lod designs in fire, goloure applied to the white glaze. Compared with the Kang Hsi five-coloured wares,
the Ming have a more primitive appearance though many of them reached a high standard, Tho colours used for the enamels-aro greens, aubergine brown, a rather muddy yellow, turquoise and a tomator-rod which is often irrides scant. The pattern was outlined in dull red or black before the enamels word applied. This five coloured wars was most successfully made during the reign of Wan Li 1673-1010).
In addition there is a good dea of Ming celadon and crackled ware in brown or grey. The celadons vary from grey-green to a deep. olive and the exposed paste is always burn to a red-brown colour. The glaze is somewhat “glassy and needs to be distinguished from the shining glaze of the earlier. Sung celadons.
"What the dollectors can Find,”
These notes are not meant for the expert or the collector with a long purse, and therefore mention will only be made of the types likely to be found in Hong Kong #bich will come within the resources of the more modest" collector or be ginnor Are there any Ming pieces to be found in the shopa here 1... Undoubtedly yes, but naturally they do not exist in large numbers., When one considers the vast quan- tities of porcelain put forth at Ching-Te-Chan for Imperial use it is only natural "that quite large amount must survive of the still greater output of heavier wares. As an example we may cite the year 1883, in the reign of Wan Li, when la palace order, for 06,000 items was the subject of a protect on the part of Wang Ching Min, the Censor, as being too extravagant, "or the Fear 1871 in the preceding reign, when the immense number of 105,770 items was ordared." "It' Ja] possible to get odd pieces of Ming blue and white or even a five-colour.; ed example, but probably there fa more celadon and brown or grey crackled ware than anything else.
No mention has been made ef individual" Ming reigns na it is usually a vary difficult matter, to decide to which exact reign a piecó belongs. The beginner must rest content that he has a Ming article and leave it at that..
Yung Oheag Imitations. In the reign of Yung Cheng Ming wares. were greatly admired and it was the fashion, to have reprodue tions of them. There are many of these reproductions of the market, and, as they belong to one, of the great periods of ceramic produc- tion, they are worth collecting, but it must be understood that they aro' Yang Cheng and not Ming. Deus]- ly the bases are neatly Anished in the Ching style, though there are instances of the flat unglazed base being copied, but the glaze is not of the Ming type. One comes across a fair, number of these ré- productions in Hong Kong especial- ly of the five-coloured and crackled. Wares
