VICTIM'S LOSS OF MEMORY.

The case in which two soldiers of

the South Wales Borderers are charged with assaulting a Chinese detective on May 3 in Pedder Street, was commenced. at Central Magistracy yesterday before Mr. E. H. Willians.

The defendants, Privates P. J. Brain and H. James pleaded "not guilty" through their solicitor. Mr. D. B. Evans.

Outlining the case for the pro secution, Mr. T. Murphy, A.S.P... slated that about 11 p.m. on May 3, the two Chinese detectives, who were on plain clothes duty, were attacked by three Europeans in plain clothes at the junction of Pedder Street and the lane at the side of the Queen's Theatre.

One of the constables, C 82, re- erived a blow on the face which

sused him to reel and stagger out into the street. When he recovered.. he saw one of the Europeans strik- ing his companion in the region of the body with a clenched fint, from which he collapsed.

Girl's Evidence.
