THUNDERSTORM SPOILS MID-WEEK PROGRAMME: PITCHES RENDERED UNFIT FOR PLAY.

FREEMAN'S WONDERFUL BOWLING AT MANCHESTER: FINE BATTING BY NEW ZEALANDĖRS.

As a result of the thunderstorm which swept across Eugland on Thuraday afternoon, cricket pitches were in a sorry plight and only one of the ten first-class matches was brought to a definite ecnclusion,

**Tick" Freeman was the hero of the mid-week matches. He bowled like one possessed against Lancashire ́ ́nt Manchester sæd took all ten wickets in the first ipuings for 70 runs. It is inter- eeting to recall the fact that when playing against the same county at Maidstone in 1920, Tiel" did the same thing and this is the third time in his career that he has performed this wonderful achievement,

DASHING DISPLAY BY VISITORS.

After putting on 488 runs in their first innings againų. Oxford on the Eniversity's ground, the Now Zea landers met with grim disappoint: ment for rain stopped play after the Dark Blues had only pat on 20 for in reply.

The visitors batted first and both Vivian and Page ran into three. Saures whilst Mille was eight short of his century when he got out. Vivian made 135 and Page collected 113. Oven Smith of the University' took 7 wickets for 135 runs. After Oxford had only just made a start, play was stopped, the scores sinud.

This match was played at Bir- mingham, and those who went to see it were treated with yet an other three-figure partnership for the first wicket by Herbert Sut cliffe and Percy Holmex. The former made 129 but Holmes, bat-ing ati- ting like a demon, was not out until New Zealanders, 1st innings 499 he had collected 2001 The match, Virinn, 135. howover, resulted in a draw,

Yorkshire took first innings and with her opening pair doing so well, declared at 438 for 8. Sutcliffe and Holmes were at, their best and though the wicket was rendered somewhat tricky by the wet won- ther, they batted like the masters they are and treated the gallery, to some delightful cricket.

Imin, however, apoiled it all for when Warwick had put on 64 for 6. play had to be stopped and York- 'shire were, therefore, forced to be content with four noints after their bright display in the first innings.
