MR. M. K. LO Addressing the gathering, Mr. M. Ke La unid :-
Gentlemen,—It is a matter of special pride and pleasure to me that, on the eve of my term of office na President of the South Chinn Athletic Assiciation, it has fallen on me the privilege of presiding over this dinner in honour of the winning, by the Association, for the first time in its history, of both the Senior Lengue and Challenge Shield. But 1 must resist the temptation of dwelling on
this matter, since that would be trea passing upon the sphere of my friend Mr. O.W, Luke, whose plea sant duty it is to proposé the tons of the team.

The pleasure to which I have alluded is of course very much en- hanced by the presence of so many distinguished guests this evening, affording, as such presence does eloquent proof that our Association

continue to rely upon the support of so many warm friends and well-wishers. But again on this subject I must not speak, and for a similar renson, namely, that my friend Mr. H. S. Mok will have, the pleasure of proposing the tonst of our guests,
Being thus deprived of two con- genial and fertile topics, I propose how to claim your attention only for a few minutes with some re- marks upon the Association, with which I am so proud to be identifi- ed, in relation to the game of Fontinh:
A Brief Regume.
The Association was started in 1017 with but 165 members, and, with a membership fee of 8826. Since then the incrense, both in member- ship and subscription, has been ex- tremely encouraging, and this year we have attained the unprocedented" record of having some 5,000 members and a membership fee of 850,000. The Association's activities' embrace athletics of practically all kinds. But its chief interest and concern is, and must he, Football.
Gentlemen, I do not think that there can be any doubt that the Chinese have taken up Football with the keenest enthusiasm, and that they have shown grent aptitude ia mastering all the fine points of the game. I venture to think that Both of these assertions can find engent support in the fact that,' in the short space of some fourteen years, no against a historic back- ground of the game itself of hun- dreds of years, our Association hag- succeeded in producing players of the high standard necessary to win these important events,
But whilst we can take logitimato pride in the prowess of our players. wa must never forget the deep debt of gratitude which is due, not only by our players but by Chinese foot- ballera in general, to our English friends who might fitly be called the pioneers of the game in the Colony, and who.. from the time when the Chinese first took up Foot-
| ball, gave freely and ungrudgingly

of their best in teaching and help. ing them to improve their game. It is one of the chief happy char acteristics of Sport that transcends Race and Creed, and that its very rivalry in the sport- ing field sorvos but to promote sin- cere friendship and mutual under- standing. To the true Sport, jeal ousy is absolutely unknown. And ao we find the representatives of so many Clubs present to-night jo re- joice with us in our victories, Gen- fleman-it-really-given-me-much pleasure to pay this genuine tribute to our sporting foreign friends,
