Customs Handicap "C" Clas4. Leveret, which ran so well at the last meeting is in at a comfortable weight in this event. Thie pony and Fritillery ought to make a xood race of it and on the whole I favour Leveret's chances, as Fritillery has so often failed in the straight, One, Third will have 14 pounds more to carry this time and at best can only be depended upon to for a place.
"
Smugglers Handicap, This race over the mile, whatevor the condition of the course, is go ing to be a very fast race, as Little Reasyr is sure to go all out to win. and the pony can speed. I don't think for a moment that he can win but he is certainly going to be responsible for making a fost pace, and, on the whole, would not be an unsound proposition, for a Fortune Bay in spite of place. the fact that he is carrying top weight, is my choice. Wonderful Stag is a good thing to follow onch way as the pony is coming up nicely and might spring a surprise to-day. If Valorous is kept for this race, I prefer his chances, to Little Beaver's for a place.
Head Mine Handicap "U" Class, City Hall, after his comfortable win over the mile and a quarter at the last meeting is sure to cont. mand a good bit of support in this race and quite rightly, I think, however, no extra 10 pounds is not going to improve his chances. CHAPMAN.
FORMER C.O. OF THE VOLUNTEERS.
Many of the senior members of the Civil Service and of the Hong Kong Volunteers will learn with regret that Lieut.-Colonel Arthur Chapman, V.D., died on April 10 last at Hampstead Hospital at the age of 00. It was as long ago as November, 1888, that Arthur Chap- man arrived in the Colony to join the staff, of the P.W.D., and was appointed acting Assistant Superin- tendent of the Fire Brigade, Later he became Assessor of Rates, a position which he held to the time of his retirement in 1920.
Colonel Cimpman's association with the Volunteers goes back to the early days of that Corps and of the beginning of his own career in the Colony, Joining as a private he worked his way up until ho became the commanding officer, a position which he held from 1907 till 1017, when he resigned, owing to indifferent health. It was largels due to Colonel Chapman that the Volunteers were raised to a state of high efficiency, and the founda tions were laid of the traditions that are so admirably maintained. A man of great personal, charm, he did much to make volunteering popular among the young men of the Colony,
