be reasonably large, gen zorthy, and well-armed. If we are ever again menheed with war there will be an instant demand for ships capable of acting as convey scurts. For this duty the long we are now building would be worse than us. Iess, for they would be at the mercy nut only of the smallest raiding erniser, but of the large, well-armed subamurines which would probably be sent out to prey upon British shipping,
A French Contrast,
A striking contrast is affordel by the sloops now building for the French Navy. In the subjoined table H.M.S. Bideford, launched at Devonport on April 1, is com- pared with the Dumont Prville, put aflon! at Bordeaux in previous werk:

Under the London Naval Treaty we are free to build. any number of sloops.so long as they do not exered 2,000 tons. Within this limit it would be possible to design a vessel of 18 knots speed, a radius of 10,000 miles, and an urnament of three or four Gin, which would be ideal for convoy werk in war. As it is, we are wasting money on "warships" which would certainty be paid off and laid up in port at tho first threat of hostilities.

BRITISH COLUMBIA'S
DEVELOPMENT.
AGENT-GENERAL HOPEFUL
Vast possibilities of development in British Columbia were described to Fellows of the Royal Empire Society at a luncheon at the
| Cannon-street: Hotel by Mr...F. ‚P. Burden Agent-General for the Pro- vince. Col. Sir Weston Jarvis, the chairman of the Society, presided,
Roferring to the four principal sources of revenue in British Columbia-agriculture, minerals, timber, and fisheries Mr. Burden said that in the last fifty years the production from 'agriculture thad risen from zero to a value of about.. £14,000,000 annually, in spite of the fact that the Province has only' about 600,000 inhabitants, more than half of whom are to be found in the cities,
The annual yield from mining was about £12,000,000; from timber, the greatest asset of British Colum- bit at the present moment, about £18,000,000 and from fisheries about £4,800,000, Great expansion might be expected, he asserted, in the mining and timber industries..
Speaking of the general situation, * MrBurienreisrkódhat there was unmistakable evidence of in- provement in the economic situation ali. over Canada.
