WIDESPREAD HAVOC BY STORM IN
TAIPO DISTRICT.
The 4.30 local train, from Shumchun, was derailed yes- terday afternoon near Taipo, many people being killed and many injured, some of them very seriously. There were no Europeans travelling by the train.
Three coaches were telescoped, nnd of the remaining two conches, one is on the rails and the other derned at the side of the track.
As soon as news of the arcident reached Kowloon Station Mr. J. Smith, the Assistant Mechanical Engineer, sot out by ear to the scene of the trouble. He arrived back at Kowloon at about 10 pm, with the first authentic account of what had huippened, an all communication with the district had been cut off by storm damage. Mr. Smith told our representative, that a bridge, between Shatin and Taijo, near No. 3 tunnel, had collapsed as the engine started to cross it.
The engine plunged down'a matter of thirty feet, and three conches crashed after it, the engine coming to rest under a wateriall,
·A CLOUD-BURST?
"It looks as if there has been a cicud burst out in that district," Mr. Smith added. "The whole place seems wrecked. The bridge in question has completely gone, and three of the bridges on the road are down. I had to walk four and a half miles to get to the scene of the accident,
Considering the nature of the smash the passengers got off lightly. I think twenty are injured and I understand that three- of them are very bad indeed. It took a long time to get them out The steel coaches stood the strain extra- of the wreckage. ordinarily well and it is only thanks to that that the casualties are not far worse than they are.

There were other doctors also helping in the work, and I left them at it.
TELEPHONE WIRES DOWN.
All the telephone wires are down nud it was impossible to get news of the accident back to Hong Kong. So far I am the only person who has got through from the scene of the accident:
"As far as I know," Mr. Smith said, "the injured have all been taken in at one place or another, and are being lookėd after."

Asked as to the Canton express, Mr. Smith said that warn- ing had been sent through to Shinchum but he did not know what had been done.
