MOSLEM NEW YEAR ON MAY 18.
Algiers, Mareli 31-From all parts of France's north African possessions, from the wild fantnesses

tho Atlas mountains which fringe the Sahara and right down to the oasis villages of the desert Mohammedan pilgrims to-day were turning their stops towards the Holy City of Mecen on the Keat innual pilgrimage
#
Shicks of the Sahara-mounted on gaily caparisoned, pure-bred Arab steeds, rich and poor merchants from the towns, and villages, nomads from the great sandy wastes, white-erowled priests from the desert monasteries and others make up the pilgrimage.
The Pilgrims are starting so enr ly to enable them to be in Meren on the Moslem New Year-May 19,
The Pilgrims made for the ports of Morocco, Algeria or Tunisin, whence pilgrim ships sail, erquimed full on every deck with true be- luvers in the Prophet. They squint all day under the burning Mediter rasean aun, shrouded in their white. Lurnauses to shield themselves from the heat, reciting the Koran' and praying for their salvation. For a whole month this migration from Che Sahara goes on, affording n picture of the varied life of the magic East.
150,000 Pilgrims a Year, About 150,000 Pilgrims from the of islam-Arabia, India, world Asia Minor, Africa-dock to Monen, swelling the population of the Holy City on the shores of the Red Sea to slightly more than 250,000. The eity is then atiling mass of humanity, all clad in white. Pro- fieering in rife:
The innkeepers and shopkeepers rely on the pilgrimage to earn sufficient to keep them for the rest of the year. Macon will be filled with an unbelievable, din. The odour will be anbearable. But the believer will be happy. He will kricel as the carpet, brought ach year from Cairo by the Egyptian nji at the same time na the traditional Mahmal, an empty covered litter emblematie of Egyp- tian sovereignty, parcs,
Then the Pilgrim will proceed to the Kanha or cubo, which was the temple of Mecca ages bofore the
time of Mohammed but which the the
Prophet made foly.

"THE SEA BAT”
"The Sea Bat," Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer's new marine melodrama, which opens at the Queen's Theatre to-marrow, should rank high with that large group of people who like their drama mixed with novelty and interesting detail,
Wesley Ruggles, the director, has produced a picture which is a per- sonification of those words, with excitement added. Those who thought there was no new situation or menace" in teledrama are invited to glance, over this original story by Dorothy Yost.
Sen bats, those giant rays wuigh- ing two tons or more, which infect tropie waters, are the monsters who supply the excitement of this tale. When one of them folds Nils Asther in its heavy wings, crushing him to death, it starts a war of reprisal in which tho tangled romances of Charles Bickford, Raquel Torres and John Miljan form a dramatic
