THE WOOLLEN ( GOODS TRADE IN

CHINA.

RAPID PROGRESS BY ITALY AND GERMANY.

ENGLAND STILL LEADS BUT AWAKENING NECESSARY.

The Statistical Branch of the Imports and Exports Department has kindly supplied us with the following figures of imports of woollen goods to China. The figures are for the list nine months of the years 1922, 1923, 1024, and 1930,

It is not a reassuring report from the point of view of the British manufacturer and trader. Our total over the period easily leads, being nearly nine times that of Germany our next rival. But for last year our total was £434,000 as against £1,289,000 in 1920 and £2,154,000 in 1924. The year 1930 found Italy to be a serious now competitor, hor figures being £110,774, while Germany had in- creaned to £202,000. There is, therefore, real need for Great Britain to hasten herself or there will be a repetition of the cotton debacle.
