SCHOOLBOYS” TOUR,

TO ROBINSON CRUSOE'S ISLAND.

Twenty-two public schoolboya have left London for a tour to the West Indica and British Guiana.

Dr. Montague Bondall, chairman of the Public School Empire Tours Committee, read a message from the Prince of Wales.

Dr. Drummond Shiols, Parlia mentary Under-Secretary for the 1r the Colonies, was there to see His ad- them off as Paddington. vioo was that they should not keep to the show-places, bus talk to the common people and go their homos"?

pilloried by Britain's Chief Film Censor, Mr. Edward Shortt, in a circular letter which he has acnt to all film companies in the country,

The letter also states that in futuro "no film will receive the Board's certifiente in which the theme, without agy redeeming char. acteristic, depends upon the intense brutality or unrelieved sordidiness of the scenes depicted."

The letter reads: "In our last reports attention has been drawn 1o the tendency to produce in- cidents of prolonged and gross brutality and sordid themes, which, it must be admitted, are unwhole- some and repugnant to large sec tions of the audiences in this coun try.

Buch films have required drastic eliminations and modifications be fore they could receive the Board's certificate. Of late it has been noticed with regret that filma aru being produced in which the dove- lopment of the theme necessitates a continuous succession of grossly brutal and sordid scenes, accom- panied, in the case of auditory fitus, with sounds that accentuate the situations, and nauseate the listener..

"No modification, however, dras- tic, can render such films suitable For public exhibition." In conse quence the Board issues the war- ing given above.

Producer's Comments.

Mr. Herbert Willcox, the well- known British film producer, stated that he welcomed the Board's ac tion.

Although in principle I am op- rosed to all forms of film censor- ship," Mr. Willcox said, "I think the Board has acted wisely in this natter. It has to be recognised that the introduction of sound into films, by heightening realism, make unpleasantly vivid things which the silent film left to the imagination,

"Scenes which were possible and permissible in silent pictures be bound The best censors, how como repugnant when gugmented ever, are the members of the public themselves. It would not be worth our while to give them films with unpleasant themes. I rejoice that it should be be so."

MEN OF THE NORTH,'

Tuned fists are one of the exigencies of talking pictures. When "Men of the North," Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer's dramatic story of the North woods, which will open Co-day at the Queen's Theatre, was filmed, a fist immersed for ten minutes in warm water did the pounding on a cabin door,

The scene is that in which Gilbert Roland comes upon Barbara Leo- nard, Arnold Korff and George Davis in a snowbound' cabin. It was filmed in the snows of Truckee. When Roland pounded on the door, it sounded in the microphonis liku a club striking the panel.

Investigation proved that the actors fist, hardened with the cold, was almost as hard as wood. So before he pounded again, ho had to soak the fist in warm water to "thaw" it until it really sounded like a fist.

The plot circles about the pursuit of a suspected law- breaker by the Mounted Police and entails exciting races on skies, and dog-sleds. An unusual detail is the filming of an avalanche which almost buries the heroine in the GILBERT

Gilbert Roland plays the leading male role, and the cast includes Barbara Leonard, Arnold Korff, Robert Elliott, George Davis, Nena Quartaro and Robert Graves, jr.
