WHY THE WALLS OF JERICHO FELL.
AIMS OF NEW EXPEDITION TO PALESTINE.
of
Garstang, Professor John Liverpool University, is loading an oxpedition which will attempt to
find out what caused the walls of Jericho to collapse before armiog of Joshua.
the
Sir Charles Marston, who with the late Lord Melchett is financing the expedition, told I reporter yesterday that last year's work at Jericho revealed the extraordinari- ly interesting fact that the walls of Jericho did actually collapse.
There were two walls," Sir Charles gaid, "the outer one about six feet thick and thirty feet high and then an inner wall twelve feet thick. It is probable that housca were built over the space between the two walls, and Professor Gar- stang and his colleagues proved last year that the outer wall col- lapsed and fell outward and drag. ged down the inner wall with it. I am interested in this work bo- cause I believe in the Bible, and think that it is a far more valuable historical record than is generally supposed.
"We know now how the Jordan dried up for Joshua's armies to cross. The mud banks of the river caved in and blocked the stream a few miles above Jericho. It may have been an earthquake. Wo da not know yet. The miraculous thing, however, is that wha' svor tho. cause it should have happened just at the critical time when Joshua wanted to cross the river.
"Several theories have been ad- vanced to explain the fall of the walls of Jericho. Some people say they were underminod, but nothing has been found to givò a vestigo of support to this idea. A more extraordinary theory is that if the ram's horn trumpets were blown on one particular note, a long blast would set up metallio vibrations in the walls and cause them to fall. "I think that is very far-fetched, but it is well to reinember that there are probably forecs of Nature available of which we know next to nothing. Perhaps these worn un- derstood by Joshua's priests. I do not know. The most feasible, sug- gestion is an earthquake, and that is the one to which archwolegiate give most crodence. The expedi- tion this year will endeavour to find traces of this catastrophe, which eccurred about 1400 .c."

Milady of 1985 were 500 more yards of lace on her undies them does the flapper of 1930. Gilbert Adrian, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stylist, discovered this in designing Greta Garbo's coatures for "Romance," her new starring tälk ing picture which is now playing: at the Queen's Theatre.
For the voluminous petticants. worn with the billowing period skirts, Adrian used more than 500 yards of lace in ruffles for each un- dergarment. For the same pur pose to-day less than a yard would. suffico.

"MEN OF THE NORTH."
Going to school in Europe taught Barbara Loonard many languages. To-day she is one of the linguistic wonders of Hollywood, speaking French, German, Italian and Spanish as readily as she does Eng- ish. It all happened because she was the daughter of an importer, who, travelling in Europe, left her in school in Switzerland one your, in Paris another, in Rome, Berlin, Madrid, according to his business. She learned the languages of her playmates To-day it is standing her in good stond in the talkies.

Professor Garstang Interviewed. Professor Garstang explained that Jericho is one of the oldest cities in the world. "It was a great city, long before Joshua," he Baid, and probably was in its heyday nearly 4,000 years ago." After it was sacked by tho Israelites, Jericho lay derelict for about 600 years. Then it was re- built and refortißed, and grew in 5.40 to 6.40 p.r.-- importance.
