She had not seen the man pro- viously, but as he produced a bill, she belioved bim and handed him the money, in return for which be gave her a receipt. A few days later, however, a sergeant went to her shop with a Chinese youth, azd' told her that she had not paid her watchmen's fees. She maintained that she had and produced a re ceipt to substantiate her atatement. The officer took the receipt and went away.
