The remaining competition is the "Boys' Championship" of which the arcond round must be completed by. Maturin the first of February. and Eager are already through and will meet in the third round. WOODLAND STAG PERFORMS CONVINCINGLY: MANY AUSTRALIAN PONIES DO FAST GALLOPS.

SOME NOTES ON OLD PONIES NOW TRAINING FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING,

BY MORNING DEW."].

Quite a large number of ponies were galloped yesterday morning as will be soen from the training times given below. The Australian ponies are being given soms very fast work to do and all of them are at the moment full of fight, though in the majority of cases the ponios are wanting in stamina. Woodland Stag went over a mile, and his time for the last three-quarters of the journey will be found below. His last quarter of 97.4 appeared almost effortless and he will probably turn out to be the best of the arrivals from Australia, Fritz again did a coN- vincing gallop. Queen Regent is another anitan! which travelled very well yesterday and hie progress should be followed as it looks as if this pony will pick up one of the five races arrang- ed for the Australian ponies at the Annual Meeting.

The Derby Class.

In the Derby class, Valorous was sent over a mile and three-quarters, but as the first half mile of the journey was very slow it is not given below. The romainder of the journey was clocked and readers will notice that the pony finishad in 30.3 seconds. He was not pven pushed to nehieve this time.

Mesars. Mackie and Grayburn's Spoy wont over

Fortune Bay went over full Derby distance, but his time is not convincing and his finish was very disappointing. Two ponies which, are just beginning to come up aro King's Service and King's Justice, Both are now stopping out nicely and we may yet see one of them being much fancied for the Derby before long.

'mile in the fast time of 2.13.2 and there is no doubt but that this pony is an excellent mover. For short distances ho will be a big fac tor, but it is seriously doubted whether the pony can stay the Derby distance at the Derby puce. King Willow and Jan Stewer continue to impress in the subscription griffin section and an- other animal which went, very well was Scrappit. Their times' will be found below.

The Old Timers. ?

Just a word about the old ponies. Quite a good number will bo racing in Hong Kong this year. Besides Diana, Bay, Apollo, Zorhan, Nationalist II., Sitting Bull, President Hall and other classy performers which are already familiar to racegoers in Hong Kong, there will be racing at the Annual Meeting, (providing nothing goes wrong in the meanwhile) Coronation Eve, Gleneagle, Hetman, and Gay Crusader all of which are really classy animals. It looks very much as it some records are due to be lowered. It may be interesting to add that Diane Bay last season's champion, is on the top of her form at the moment and can easily be depended upon to eclipso her performances of last year. Readers will find details of some of these ponies and their training performances in next week's training notes,

IDEAL.

́EUGEN D'ALBERT'S LIFE-

STORY.

The life-story of the world's most married living man of genius, Eugen d'Albert, the pianist and composer, who was horn of British parents in Glasgow, is told by Herr Wilhelm Bauppin . hography which is causing a big

stir in German artistic circles.

Horr Raupp tries to explain why the gent musician's six marriages ended in shipwrcek, and he de fends him against the charge of beartlessness constantly being brought by feminista in England, Germany. and other countries,

Intellectual Heights... Not one of the six women with whom d'Albert fell in love was able, it seems, to follow him to the emotional and intellectual heights whore his soul ranged, although one, Hermino Finck, in the course of a marriage aeting 15 years, nearly succeeded in so doing.

CLUB GO DOWN TO NAVY,

Playing on the U.S.R.C. ground: Inst evening, the Hong Kong, Hockey Club lost their arst game in the Sim Bhiold competition, when they went down to the Royal Navy by thren goals to nil.

The game on the whole was fairly exciting, and it was perhaps due to the fact that the Club made some changes in their forward line that they lost the game,

Club Defence Bato.

In the first half, the Club defend. ed the goal at the clubhouse end and though the Navy appeared, to be dangerous more than once, they could not get within shooting die tance, and in the few sinies that they did, they found the Club defence safe.

Of the two sides, the Navy com. bined with better understanding and their forwards worked very hard together. They were unfortu- nate in not getting a goal in the first half.

The Navy Scores,

D'Albert lives in petirement. among the Italian lakes, and his frionde say he is not likely again try his luck in matrimony. His Arst wife was Louis Salingre, a Weimar actress, whom he met soon after leaving England in 1883

Like first, this second marriage the opened harmoniously, and musician--whose fame was steadily mounting-was loud in Teresa's praise in letters to friends, but Lefore four years had passed there were signe of incompatibility" and the marriage was dissolved,

Overcome by misory resulting from this second love disappoint

ment, the Master plunged into work.

The third. Mra d'Albert was Hermine Finck, another Woimar

actress, whom he married in 1895.

In her the Mneter was confidont he had found his destined "eoul mate."

The marriage lasted 18 years, ending like those before and those tlist were to follow in completo dis ister..

Bell-Expression.

The biographer says that d'Albert parted from Hormino because ho idolised her, and "the inexorable and cruel peed for self-expresion could not for once allow itself to to be subjugated by the moral- preaching law of the bourgeois." (Continued on next Column

Almost immediately upon resump. 'tion the Club goal had a narrow escape and shortly after this Bar- man opened the scoring for the sailors. The same player added his second goal very soon afterwards and towards tho ond Else seared the third goal for the Navy, making the scores: Navy 3; Club 0.

but think that if they had paid more attention to their left wing which was unmarked most of the time they might have scored

The fourth wife wae Ids Fulda, a woman of "creative personality," Lut, who, according to Herr Raupp, remained enigmatic and cold when in intervals between work the Mas- ter stretched out his hand for hers. This marriage was of short duration, and Ida was succeeded Fritzi Jauner, one of the mas ter's most gifted pupils.

The fifth wife was a sportswomen who played tennis and golf, but she too was apparently unable t unwilling to climb emotional und intellectual hoighta. She was suc ceeded, as wife Number 6 by. Hilda Fels, a charming Jewess, from Mannheim.

The sixth marriage was not more successful thin the others. Hilda, according to Herr Raupp, having no idea of the real nature of the man of genius, her husband,

In 1928 the last woman withdrew from the life of the musician. A life-long search after the ideal wo man, says the biographer, had end- ed in failure.

Eugen D'Albert's famous opéra, Tiefland," was played at Coveni Garden in 1910.
