THE VITALITY OF SUPERSTITION.

(Continued from Page 1.)

Under a Ladder.

There is something peculiarly. irritating in widespread customs

which are so obviously irrational that one cannot understand any anne person believing in them. I cannot understand the position of the atheist, or of the Sadducee, who "bolioves neither in angel nor spirit," but I cannot understand how anyone can believe in a God Who is angry if thirteen people sit down to table; Who likes the numbers 3, 7, and 8; Who will bring us to humiliating end if we walk under a ladder, and Who frowns on enter prises begun on Friday. The whole thing is utterly silly for wards.

However, there is a reason why these absurd beliefs have shown Buch vitality. The imagination is terribly potent. Taith can remove the mountains which faith has put there. A talisman is a real protec tion against witchcraft. If you be lieve in witches, it is better to be lieve in the talisman. The ordeal V ร

taken under ecclesiastical patronage; the duol is, of course, a mere survival of the ordeal.

How far faith can cure disense is still disputed. It is usually said by doctors that suggestion can often eure functional but not organic dis- ease. But when we ask them who- ther a hard and fast line can be drawn between functional and or- gauir, they hesitate. Faith-healing Beets and individual healers will continue to flourish until the whofe subject is put on a scientific basis; and we are still a long way from this.

LATENT CIVIL WAR IN GERMANY.

It is the first victory of the counter offensive against the new Fascist reaction in Germany.

The authorities were prevailed upon to suppress All Quiet" under pressure from the Nazis and fear of disorders. The result was that all films, plays, public meet- ings, and so on were exposed to the danger of suppression if enough people could be found to demon strate against them and threaten trouble. In this way infinite pos sibilities were open to the Nazis But when they nounced their demonstration at Magdeburg, the Republican Reichsbanner announe. ed a counter-demonstration. result would have been disorder, perhaps of a formidable kind. The authorities thereupon decided to prohibit the meeting (the meeting

Nazis. The Communists are almost forgotten, in spite of their great numerical strength. What has for years been apparent is now quite clear-namely, that a revolutionary situation in Germany would sweep over the heads of the Communiste. This is what is happening now, and, what is more, they, or at least the leaders, know it.

The onslaught on persons and on. meeting-halls, the fights between partisan groups, and the general violence and disorder are now such in Germany that it is almost an under-estimate to speak of latent civil war. But it is not so much the number of killed and wounded and the amount of damage done (which is not much greater than it has been for months past) but the character of the conflict, that mat

Democracy's Danger.

Ал кооп as the election returns were out, it was clear that German democracy was in danger. The danger is now so real that Gorman democracy can hardly be said to exst any longer. But the present situation is one in which democracy can be restored. Its ultimate de- struction or restoration may be de eidod within the next few months..

The struggle that has now begun

in real carnet is one of the very greatest importance. It is usually underrated because almost all Ger- man news comes from Berlin, and most of it is about Berlin, where there is nothing so conspicuous just now as the passivity of the Left. But under the influence of the pro- vinces this passivity may come lo an end very soon.
