MIXED MARRIAGES IN LIVERPOOL.
BISHOP'S COMPLAINT.
WOMEN TERRORIZED, BY ROMAN PRIESTS,
Liverpool, Dec. 2.-The Bishop of Liverpool (Dr. David), in a com. munication which he handed to me la-day, writes the Times correspon- dent, returns to his statement at the recent Dioceant Conference on things which, he said, stood in the way of a Christian temper between Anglicans and Roman Catholics in Liverpool. Among the things ho complained of on that occasion were the methods by which, he said, "Roman priests brought relentless pressure upon non-Roman partners in mixed marriages."
E.C. Bishop's Disclaimer. Dr. David says that in October he asked the Archbishop of Liver- pool (Dr. Downcy) whether it was by his authority that Roman priests constantly asserted that partners in mixed marriages who were unwill- ing to submit to Roman rites and conditions were not married, and that their children were illegitimate. In a very courteous reply the Arch- bishop explained to him the Romag Catholic marriage law, and added, I cannot imagine any priest would be so ignorant and foolish as to pro- nounce the children of a mixed mar. riage contracted outside the Church illegitimate." He (Dr. David) had now sent the Archbishop six ex- tract from letters (others wero.in process of being verified) specifying occasions since the time when the
