supply to the screen. If this supply is missing, or if the voltage is too low, the tuning will be sharper than usual and volume less.

What is likely to be the matter when the set is noisy First take off the aerial and earth; if the noises go it is clear that they are produced in the aerial or earth circuit. It is possible that the serial or earth wires may bo frac tured or making poor contact some where. Should the sidises persist with the aerial and earth removal, pull out the first value in the sot, "then the second and so on, sons to discover, if possible, which part of the circuit is noisy.

Poor selectivity may be a sign that there is a leakage across a tuned circuit, but, as a rule, when selectivity becomes poor the fault is be found in the aerial circuit.

Intermittent reception is usually the result of a poor contact, Look for a bad grid-lenk connection, n poor switch contact or a faulty "Motor-boating” -in- condenser. dientes a faulty high-tension supply, or a discharged grid battery..

You should start with the aerial circuit, looking over the aerial, earth, switch and con- necting wires. Look-over the act for a broken wire, or a poorly

When the tuning appears to have become sharper than usual the fault may be found in the serial circuit,

If you have a high-tension mains unit and a hum is heard, try first placing the unit well away from the set. If the hur is still heard put a g-microfarad condenser across the different tappings. An over- loaded mains unit will hum, there fore, try reducing the hum by in creasing the bias on the power valve. This lowers the current, and may cut out the hum.
