** LIBERATION" OF

CHILDREN,

An amazing marriage ritual, in which the parties used romantic mons-do-plume, was disclosed in the omain publication of the Order of Woodoraft Chivalry.

The ceremony was performed by * Golden Eagle," chioftain of the order, on the eve of August Bank Holiday, in a doll on the edge of The New Forest.

WEDDING MINUET.

"If we be given children, I wish to be jointly concerned with her in the parture of their bodies and minds until they shall be fully grown, and in their liberation from our control as soon as they shall be fit for it.".

This striking passage formed part of the ritual performed at the anar- riage of two members of the Order of Woodoraft Chivalry, as disclosed recently in "Pine Cone," the affinial organ of the order.

The ritual, now disclosed for the Erst time, reveals the romantic noms-de-plume in vogue among

nombera of the order.

The bridegrown, an ex-Army sur- goon, was known a "Desmos," while the bride, a Cambridge M.A. and a school teacher, figured as "White Lion."

Because of the favourable report

by Mr. Harley Granville-Barker, by Chairman Borah's committe speaking at the annual conference Senate ratification of the Sino- of the British Drama Lengue at American arbitration treaty is virtually assured, The report will Exeter,

find a place on the Senato eaten. dar and, it is expected, the treaty will be ratified before the present session of Congress adjourns,

He added that such a grant from the B.B.C. funds might be allotted by the Government to be used, firal, as a credit for the establish ment of a national theatre, and then after, as it might he needed, as sufficient yearly-endowment for its support.

A

I think there is much to be said in favour of such a scheme, credit of about £1,000,000 would be needed to meet the cost of a

ntional theatre, but I do not think it practicable to raise a credit to that amount by private aubserip tions. I think that, in some form or another, wo must use public money, and I want official approval for the scheme. Yet I do not ave any Chancellor of the Exchequer of our time nakedly putting down in his budget £1,000,000 for national theatre.

Support for the Arts.

The B.B.C. money is in slightly different category. It in in the nature of a profit made by

U.S. AND WORLD COURT.

PROPOSAL FOR COUNTRY'S ENTHY POSTPONED.

Wishington, Dec. 4.-Proponents of American adherence to the World Court protocol to-day agreed to the postponement of considera- tion of the proposal to effect the entrance of America to the inter- national tribunal.

Those who favour American en trance to the court are willing to allow further consideration of the mattor by the State to await the conmaing of the 72nd congress in Decembar of 1931.

But strangely enough, Senators

A corporation working under Gov.who oppose American membership erument monopoly, and it is earn in the World Court are unwilling el partly by exploiting the arts of to make any agreemont as to when the drama and music. It would be the Senate will debate the project appropriate, naturally, that mener again. They contend that unani- mous consent of the Senate is ne earned in such a way should be Orchestrial music, including used in support of the arts. There, Beethoven's Minuet in G, inau-At any rate, is a means of finance gurated the proceedings, which were staged in Sandy Balls Wood, on the edge of the New Forest.

Than "Golden Eagle," deftain of the order, read from the "wiso words of the founder of the order," Mr. Ernest Westlake, as follows:-

As the order is international, and marriage custoon varies in different countries, wo do not. presume to lay down any rule common to the order. We think that in a thing so intimate and peonal it is for members to form their own opinions, and to adjust, the claims of their God, their lady, and their fellow-men as they do in other inatters of religion.

Marriage bring the most swered and important of all human re- lations, whether for the indivi- dual or society, we desire that its name may be hallowed equally with the name of God, and that members will do nothing to im- pugn its holy name before their neighbours.

There is ample precedent for allocating rancy earned in a parti- cular way for a particular purpose. There is, for instance, the Road Fund. As soon as a Chancellor of the Exchequer is able to turn round and take breath, I think those B.B.C. profits might be earmarked for the support of the fine nila, and especially for those of music and the drama. The beat means of assuring such a stop being taken is to educate public opinian."

Mr. Alec. L Rea asked why n poor person who contributed his 10. a year for his wireless Act should bo robbed for antional theatre? The Rond Fund was rais- ed for the benefit of people who used the roads. The B.B.C. fands should be used for benefiting people who used the wireless.
