COMBINE AGAINST THE UNITED STATES?

(Continued from Page 1)

The Americana' have one great ad- vantage in this conflict. They are one united nation against several adversaries, but this advantage will ba neutralised when European coun- tries begin to realise that their only chance of salvation is to combine

against America. This renelion, to my mind, should be less of a mate rial than of a inoral character. Some, at least, of Europe's indus

The trica gained by the war. French coal-mince and the German dye industry lave attained a stage of development which enables them' to defy competition, even from America I am convinced that if Europeans pull, together they can get along quite well without Ameri: can goods. America cannot afford to loso our customs, and when she sces that the present system does not work to her beat interests sho will alter her methods.

Our greatest handicap in Europe is the perpetual danger of war. An American humorist has said that it is an act of kindnces on the part of America to take our money, be- cause, if she did not, we would only spend it on armaments. This re mark has a tinge of hypocrisy and also an element of truth. The Euro. peaa atmosphere is still charged with explosives, and the only feal guarantee of peace is that the pre- seat generation has had enough of war. When it has passed away and been replaced by one that is younger and more vigorous, the cause of peace

will bo in great perd. Many Americans are convinced that their European debtors are on the vergo of bankruptcy and that the winest Goured in to save what can be saved- and get their money as best they
